In the Spotlight: NPN override update
As part of our ongoing commitment to compliance and clarity, we are refining our approach to National Producer Number (NPN) override usage, which refers to agents or solicitors submitting Marketplace applications using another agent’s or principal’s NPN. Beginning this fall, all agents will be required to use their own assigned NPN for all UnitedHealthcare Individual & Family Plan (IFP) enrollments. This update will be reflected in 2026 contract amendments to contracted agencies and agents.
Why this matters
The use of NPN override has created challenges in tracking agent activity, managing complaints, and maintaining oversight. Our refined approach is designed to enhance visibility, streamline reporting, and reinforce compliance—while continuing to support the success of our valued agencies, agents, and solicitors.
What you should know
- Improved reporting: Writing agent NPNs will now be reflected on enrollments, enabling more accurate performance tracking at both the agency and agent/solicitor levels.
- Book of business visibility: Agents/solicitors will be listed as the agent of record on enrollments and will have access to their book of business while within the agency’s hierarchy. Book ownership, however, will remain with the upline agency as applicable.
- Compliance assurance: Credential validation will ensure all enrollers meet licensing and appointment requirements, supporting regulatory alignment and operational integrity.
